         With polling day only one week away, pre-election tension is flaring as a growing number of campaign-related threats and brawls have been reported in various parts of the country.

         The famed Taiwanese Opera troupe Ming Hwa Yuan has been plaued by harassing phone calls since its lead singer Sun Tsui-feng openly pledged her support for Kuomintang presidential hopeful Lien Chan.

         “We’ve had thousands of phone calls at our offices in Pingtung and Taipei since three weeks ago,” said Chen Sheng-fu, director of the 200-member troupe.

         “Anonymous callers called us names and threatened to keep us away form the National Theater. Some shouted that we are not “true Taiwanese” and that we should crawl back China, “he deplored.

         Chen stressed that his troupe backs a candidate, not the political party, because of the candidate’s efforts in promoting traditional performing arts.

         “We’ve stumped for candidates from both the Democratic Progressive Party and the “pan-blue” camp during previous regional and national elections “he stated.

         “We are entitled to the freedom of speech and should be allowed to support whoever we want to,” he said. “Besides, we never speak ill of the candidates we don’t support in front of the audience.”
